Kukis Protest Against Meiteis' Plan To Visit "Sacred" Thangjing Hill For Annual Pilgrimage In Manipur

Members of the Kuki tribes gathered at Thangjing Hill in Manipur's Churachandpur and held a protest on Sunday to prevent Meiteis from undertaking their annual pilgrimage to the "sacred site", officials said. The protesters reached the hill in many vehicles to hold a sit-in, they said.

On Saturday, Kuki organisations "warned" the Meitei community against climbing Thangjing Hill, saying any such attempt "will be opposed tooth and nail".

The Meitei Heritage Society in a statement said the "Indian State must decide if the rule of law should prevail and whether the constitutional rights of its citizens should be safeguarded".

Threatening Meiteis to skip the pilgrimage to Thangjing Hill is "unconstitutional and blatant violation of freedom of free movement and right to religious practices", it said.

Thangjing Hill is considered a sacred site for the Meiteis, who visit it in April.

"There is speculation that the Meitei community intends to cross the buffer zone for Chinga Kaba at Thangting Hill in the month of April. No political settlement has been reached between the Government of India and the Kuki-Zo community, and without such an agreement, the Meitei community has no jurisdiction to enter Kuki-Zo land," six Kuki-Zo groups said in a statement.

READMeitei Body Condemns Threat To Stop Pilgrimage To "Sacred Hill", Kuki Groups Say Can't Cross "Buffer Zone"

"Whoever attempts to cross the buffer zone shall be considered a direct challenge to the Kuki-Zo community, and any untoward incidents that occur during such attempts shall be solely the responsibility of those who undertake them," it added.

The sensitive area, heavily guarded by the security forces, separates the Meitei-controlled valley areas and the Kuki-dominated hill districts.

Security has been heightened at many places in Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts, including Moirang and Phougakchai Ikhai, as a precautionary measure, officials said.

How A 6-Month Course Could Save Lakhs Of Teaching Jobs

NCTE's Bridge Course: The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has introduced a mandatory six-month bridge course for primary school teachers with BEd degrees who were appointed based on the NCTE notification issued on June 28, 2018. These teachers, primarily recruited in states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh, must complete the bridge course in Primary Teacher Education to retain their jobs. Those who fail to complete the course will risk losing their positions.

While the exact number of affected teachers is not yet clear, reports suggest that around 3 to 4 lakh primary teachers may be affected. Some teachers, particularly in Chhattisgarh, have already been dismissed, but with the announcement of this course, there is a possibility for their reinstatement.

What Is the NCTE Bridge Course?

According to NCTE Chairman, Professor Pankaj Arora, the responsibility for conducting the online bridge course has been handed over to the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). The course, developed after extensive discussions, comprises essential components necessary for primary teaching. The curriculum is designed to meet high academic standards and includes a mandatory internship to ensure comprehensive preparation.

Which BEd Teachers Are Affected?

Professor Arora clarified that the bridge course will apply only to BEd degree holders who were appointed as primary teachers between June 28, 2018, and the Supreme Court ruling on August 11, 2023. The new NCTE rules will not apply to teachers appointed after this period.

In 2018, NCTE's notification allowed BEd degree holders to be eligible for primary teacher positions. This led to widespread appointments across the country. However, the Primary Teachers' Association challenged the notification in the Jodhpur High Court, which ruled in their favour, declaring the notification void. Those appointed as teachers based on this ruling appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, which upheld the High Court's verdict on August 11, 2023. The Supreme Court also directed that a bridge course be created for the BEd degree holders appointed during this period, ensuring they receive necessary pedagogical training.

Following this, the Supreme Court issued a directive on April 8, 2024, for NCTE to roll out the bridge course before the one-year deadline of April 7, 2025, ensuring that these teachers are equipped with the essential teaching methods required for primary education.

Several Cops Injured During Anti-Waqf Protest Rally In Tripura

Several policemen sustained injuries during a clash between the security personnel and the agitators who held a protest rally against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act in northern Tripura's Kailashahar under Unakoti district on Saturday afternoon.

The protest, organized by the Kailashahar Joint Action Committee, began from Tilabazar and proceeded towards Kubjhar area as they did not get police permission and decided to organise it outside the municipal area.

However, upon reaching Kubjhar, the situation escalated allegedly after a shoe was thrown towards the rally, which then took an ugly turn and a clash with police personnel followed. Bricks, stones, and glass bottles were thrown at cops.

This left Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Jayanta Karmakar, Police Inspector Jatindra Das, and several other officers injured.

The situation turned chaotic, forcing the police to resort to a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Protesters then fled the scene.

Police forces, including Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel and central paramilitary units, deployed in large numbers at the site included Kailashahar Police Station officer-in-charge Sukanta Sen Chowdhury, Irani Police Station OC Arundaya Das, and DSP Utpalendu Debnath.

Following the violence, the injured security personnel were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

In the aftermath, Unakoti District Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R and Northern Range DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath visited the area to assess the situation.

While the DIG later confirmed that the situation was under control, but some argument was seen between SP Sudhambika R and opposition Congress leader Md Badruzzaman who led the protest.

While DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath assured that peace had been restored in the area, protest leader Md Badruzzaman claimed that many protesters were injured due to police action and blamed the authorities for provoking the violence.

The incident has triggered fear and unrest across the Kailashahar subdivision, with police maintaining heightened vigil to prevent further disturbances.

President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on April 5, as announced by the Law Ministry in a notification on the same day.

The Bill was recently passed by parliament after intense and lengthy debates in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The law seeks to improve governance by enhancing transparency in property management, streamlining coordination between Waqf boards and local authorities and protecting stakeholders' rights.
